Scoring for the TOEFL ITP® Tests

How the Tests Are Scored

The TOEFL ITP® Level 1 and Level 2 section scores are determined by the number of correct answers, which is converted to a scaled score. The score report provides scaled scores for the Listening Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension sections. The total scaled score is derived from the 3 scaled scores using a formula presented in the Test Taker Handbook.

The TOEFL ITP Speaking test scores are determined by the responses to the task prompts. Responses are scored using AI technology, which allows for immediate score reporting.

Detailed Score Reports

TOEFL ITP score reports are provided by the local ETS Preferred Network offices and include:

  • individual information for your program to distribute to students
  • institutional information and a score roster for internal use only
  • total scores and section scores

Segmenting the scores by section provides greater insight into which skills need more work. This enables you to tailor your instruction accordingly and better meet the needs of each student.

The score report for the TOEFL ITP Speaking test is provided as a separate score report from the TOEFL ITP Level 1 and Level 2 tests.

Score Validity

TOEFL ITP score reports are valid for 2 years. Because language proficiency can change considerably in a relatively short period of time, scores more than 2 years old cannot be reported or verified.

Interpreting Scores

To help you interpret TOEFL ITP scores, ETS has conducted multiple studies, including a study to map test scores to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), and a score descriptor study.

Test and Score Data Summaries

The TOEFL ITP® Test and Score Data Summaries contain data on the performance of examinees who took a TOEFL ITP test between January and December of a calendar year.

Student Achievement Certificates

You can recognize your students' achievement in English-language proficiency with 3 levels of certificates awarded by the TOEFL ITP program. Each TOEFL ITP certificate corresponds to a CEFR level. Certificates only include the TOEFL ITP Level 1 test scores.
