Registration and Submission for the Performance Assessment for Teacher Leaders (PATL)

How to Register

See the registration dates and submission windows for the Performance Assessment for Teacher Leaders (PATL). Be sure to register early enough to allow yourself plenty of time to complete the assessment.

  1. Create an ETS® Performance Assessment account. To purchase the assessment, create an account in the online registration system and establish your own username and password. You will receive an email confirming that you have successfully created your account. This account is where you access your performance assessment, submit your tasks and view your scores.

    Note: If you have an account for the GRE® test, you may use those account credentials to log in to the Performance Assessments registration system. You cannot use your Praxis® account credentials because the ETS Performance Assessments registration site is different from the registration site used for Praxis assessments.

  2. Select your test and submission window. Follow the instructions to purchase your assessment. Verify that the state in which you are seeking certification appears above the list of assessments. Be sure to select the appropriate submission window that best conforms to your clinical experience schedule. See Dates and Deadlines for additional information on submission windows.

  3. Identify your educator preparation program. When prompted, select the state and educator preparation program (EPP) that is requiring you to take the assessment. The EPP you select automatically receives your score for the assessment, which includes individual scores for all tasks.

  4. Select score recipients. Your cumulative score and highest scores for each task are automatically sent to the EPP you selected. If you are seeking certification in a state that has established a passing score with ETS, the state certification agency will automatically receive a copy of your scores. You may select up to four additional score recipients at no extra cost. You can add or modify these recipients up until 10 p.m. ET the night before the task submission deadline. If you wish your scores to be sent to a state certification department, be sure to select them as a score recipient.

  5. Answer background information and assessment-related questions. You will be asked to provide demographic and other background information that may be used for research purposes. In addition, you will be asked to respond to several questions relating to your internship.

  6. Pay. You can pay by credit/debit card, eCheck, through PayPal®, or by voucher. The credit/debit cards accepted are American Express®, Diners Club International®, Discover®, JCB® Card, MasterCard®, RuPay Global, UnionPay® or VISA®.

  7. Confirmation. You will receive an email confirming your registration.

Register for Resubmission

If your assessment score falls below the passing score for the assessment, you are eligible to resubmit any or all three tasks for a fee. Only one resubmission per task is permitted during the resubmission window. The resubmission window immediately follows the reporting of your total assessment scores.

To register for resubmission:

  • Select your appointment number from the "View Scores" page.
  • Select the "Resubmit Appointment" link under the Actions heading.
  • Select the assessment submission window. You will be presented with a list of the three tasks.
    Select the task(s) for which you wish to register and proceed to Checkout.

Rescheduling Your Submission Window

If you select a submission window and then decide to change to a later one, you will be subject to a $40 rescheduling fee.

Note that the registration window closes earlier than the submission window.

Important: Tasks and artifacts uploaded for the original submission window will not transfer automatically to the new submission window. If you reschedule, you will be required to re-upload any tasks you have previously uploaded. All tasks and artifacts must be submitted by the same deadline date.

Submitting Task Responses and Artifacts

Each task contains steps that will vary across tasks. The steps are displayed in numbered textboxes in the PATL submission system. Some steps of a task may contain multiple activities, and this will be reflected by multiple textboxes. You will compose and enter your responses directly into these textboxes. Task responses can be entered one at a time or simultaneously. If you have been working on your responses outside of the submission system, using a Microsoft Word® document for example, use the copy and paste functions on your computer to import text from the document into the applicable textbox. Your written commentary must be entered in the applicable textboxes. Inclusion of written commentary as an artifact or document is not acceptable.

Important: When pasting text into the textbox from another source, select the "Paste as plain text" instead of "Paste" with your mouse.

When you submit a task response for scoring, it must be complete and include all required artifacts. All artifacts must be uploaded into the PATL submission system.

Appropriate artifact file types include doc, pdf, ppt, xls, docx, pptx, xlsx, rtf, jpeg, png or txt. Files must not exceed 1 MB. Artifact file names can include letters, numbers and other characters such as periods, underscores, hyphens, square brackets and parentheses (rtf files from a Macbook® will not upload correctly). Artifact files should not contain links to third-party sites. Raters will not go to a third-party site to retrieve your artifact.

All tasks and artifacts must be submitted by the same deadline date.

Working in Multiple Browser Windows May Affect Data Integrity

When working in the submission system, work in only one browser window of the submission system. Having multiple browser windows open in the submission system may result in loss of data or change to data especially when the autosave process runs in all open windows.

Helpful Tips for Submission

  • Read all requirements and guiding prompts requested in each task, and make sure you are not omitting any details in your response.
  • Ensure any artifacts being submitted are relevant and clear, and properly illustrate what is being requested in the corresponding task.
  • Save your work frequently when you are working in the submission system; any work you do not save may be lost if your session times out. If you are idle for 17 minutes or more while you are logged into the online submission system, the system will time out.

Resubmitting a Task

If you do not pass the assessment, you may resubmit any or all of the six tasks. There is a $75 resubmission fee for each task you choose to resubmit.

Tasks may be resubmitted in the resubmission window immediately following the original submission window. If you do not resubmit within this timeframe, you will have to register and pay to retake the assessment. See Dates and Deadlines for resubmission windows.
