Identification (ID) Requirements

When you register for a TOEFL® test, you will be required to provide identification (ID) information. In addition, you must spell your name exactly as it appears on the primary ID document(s) you plan to bring to the test center on test day (other than accents or apostrophes).

If you have a multiple-part first/given or last/family name, enter it exactly as it appears on the ID you will bring to the test center, excluding accents and apostrophes. For example, if your first/given name is Jean Louis, enter both names in the First/Given Name(s) field. Be sure to enter your names so they appear in the same order as they do on your ID document.

If you do not have a first/given name or do not have a last/family name, enter your name in the Last/Family Name field and leave the other field blank. This is because the Last/Family Name field is mandatory and the First/Given name field is not.

The Middle Name field is optional, but if your ID shows a middle name, you should enter it so the names match exactly.

Test takers are responsible for bringing valid and acceptable ID each time they report to a test center. It is your responsibility to ensure that your ID documents are up-to-date and available on the day of the test.

If you do not bring valid and acceptable ID, or if the name on your ID does not exactly match the name on your registration, you will not be permitted to test and your test fee will not be refunded.

If you are concerned about a discrepancy, contact TSReturns@ets.org before you register.

Your ID requirements depend on where you plan to test and your country of citizenship. Please review the general ID requirements below, then select the country/location where you plan to test to see specific ID requirements.

General ID Document Requirements

With few exceptions, ID documents must meet all of the following requirements. Each ID document must:

  • be an original document; photocopied documents are not acceptable and documents cannot be presented on a mobile phone or any other electronic device
  • be a government-issued national/state/province identity card that is issued and recognized by the country where you are a citizen or resident
  • be valid; expired documents (bearing expiration dates that have passed) are not acceptable
  • include your full name exactly matching the name on the ID document used to register, excluding accents or diacritical marks
  • include a recent, recognizable photograph
  • include your signature (the name on the ID and the signature name must match)

Test Takers 15 Years of Age or Younger

If you are age 15 or younger when you take the test, you must be accompanied by a parent or other authorized adult age 18 or older, who will be required to complete and sign a release form at the test center. That person must stay at the test center throughout the entire testing session, or your scores may be invalidated and your test fee will not be refunded.

Both you and the parent or authorized person must present valid, acceptable ID, or you will not be able to take the test. If you are unable to meet the ID requirements, contact the Office of Testing Integrity at TSReturns@ets.org before you register for the test.
