Joshua Parker - The code of ethics was adopted in June of 2015. So the next step is how can we make the code of ethics something that is common in most districts and most schools throughout the country?

Troy Hutchings- Historically, our profession has not given itself permission to have the very difficult conversations about the ethical dilemmas that teachers face every day.  This void, this vacuum that currently exists within the profession is absolutely fixable. It’s absolutely something that can be addressed.

Kimberly Worthy - There needs to be transparency. So there needs to be a clear set of ideas of what our school believes is ethical behavior so we have a clear understanding, everyone knows. But then, take that transparency even a little further. In our staff meetings, talk about things openly.

Troy Hutchings - We need to allow educators and educational leaders and paraprofessionals and everybody a part of the schooling community to collaborate together.

Joshua Parker - In making the code of ethics, the idea was that it was the start of a conversation around what it means to be ethical in the classroom from a practitioner’s perspective. And so to continue that conversation, there needs to be ongoing, job-embedded training, feedback and assessments to make sure that that information is learned and practiced.

Troy Hutchings - Educational Testing Service is absolutely leading the dialogue in this particular domain. They are the country’s largest educational research institution, and they’re leveraging that research to inform the profession in the area of educator ethics.

Janet Cook - As a result of a summit that we held in the Chauncey Conference Center a couple of years ago on educator ethics, we developed product called ProEthica. Teachers make hundreds of ethical decisions a day, and yet they’re not really trained on how to properly do it.

What could really happen?  Tutoring – A student in a sixth grade math class is struggling and the student’s parent offers to pay the student’s classroom teacher to provide tutoring after school. 1. The teacher accepts the offer and provides tutoring services at the public library.  Tutoring goes well, the student improves, and the teacher makes some extra money. 2. The teacher accepts the offer and provides tutoring services at the public library.  The parent of the student is friends with the school’s principal and mentions the tutoring arrangement in passing.  The principal requests a meeting with the teacher to discuss the issue.]

Janet Cook - ProEthica is a tool to enable them to simulate those ethical decisions and the ethical decision-making process so that when they’re out in the real world they’re able to make good decisions on the fly.

Joshua Parker - As a teacher, I have my own idea about how things should work, as does the person right next door. But if we have a common set of principles that guides our work, we can engage in conversations from the same plane.

Kimberly Worthy - Let’s talk about it openly, so that it becomes the norm to hold each other accountable, and holding our ethics, you know, up to standard, and saying: This is what we’re doing – we’ve promised our students, our families, each other.

Troy Hutchings - A code of ethics is a starting place. It’s quite honestly a document, and it needs wings and it needs to be a part of the fabric of the entire profession. With a code of ethics for educators, as well as professional development, we’ll honestly be able to say to society: You can trust us. You can trust us with your children, you can trust us with your greatest assets. And we promise that not only will we do our jobs and do it well, but we’ll actually do it within a framework that’s appropriate and proper for your children.
